Commentary: Don't let the door hit you in the rear on your way out, kids
In late summer you passed them in the grocery store, shoulders slumped, dragging their heels with exhaustion. They smile at you at the beach as they wearily pass out sandwiches to their little sandy creatures. My eyes met one at the pool last week as she broke up yet another fight between her offspring. This worn-out parent looked at me with my own misbehaved little ones and groaned, 'Five more days. How about you?' 'Same,' I replied with clenched teeth. 'But who's counting?' Starting in early to mid-August we parents start the countdown until school starts. We are done. The kids are done, and it's time for the professionals to take over.

Westmont runs to lopsided win over Fremont
Running backs are an important part of a football team. But the truth is, if the offensive line doesn't create the holes, it doesn't matter how good the back is. Fortunately for the Westmont football team, tackles Jonnell Rojas and Jesse Tapia, guards Mauricio Gonzalez and James Suter and center Jason Mehta were opening enough holes on Sept. 3 so that Alex Kamara and Ian Harvel could run for daylight in Westmont's 33-0 win over Fremont.

Stacie a 'Savage' on the field, now joins Hall
Stacie Savage's soccer success story began as a shy 5-year-old, reluctant to step onto a Sunnyvale athletic field. Once her mother coaxed her into giving it a shot, though, taking shots became a large part of her persona. No matter the level of competition, Savage was often unstoppable. Whether playing youth soccer for the Sunnyvale Alliance, Cupertino Conquistadores and State Select teams, helping De Anza College win a state championship in 1994, setting scoring records at San Jose State University, or challenging semi-pro defenders with the California Storm, her passion came out in her play. 'Soccer allowed me to be aggressive,' said Savage, who will be inducted along with six others into the San Jose State Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 17. 'I was a different person as a player.'
